The New Signs Go Up

Two of the three LFCA information signs were installed by a group of volunteers on December 19, 1999 using one power auger, eight bags of concrete and a few hours of hard labor. Our thanks to the following individuals, most of whom are captured in the pictures below.

Modisto Lane Work Crew: Barry Benroth, Steve Gilbert, Harry Hopkins, Kurt Lauer, and Ed Palekas.

Maritime Lane Work Crew: Barry Benroth, Steve Gilbert, Harry Hopkins, Ed Palekas, and Mike and Jennifer Yurina.

New Signs Goes Up
Working the power auger. We needed 10-inch holes that were 36 inches deep. Of course, Mother Nature put lots of rocks where they were not really. Barry (left) is waiting his turn as Harry (center) and Steve (right) start working on the first hole.

New Signs Go Up
First sign (at Modisto Lane) in the ground. Our all-volunteer crew (Barry, Ed, Steve and Harry) tilt the first sign up and set the posts in the new auger holes. Gusty winds made this a little scary at times.

New Signs Go Up
It's up! Barry (left), Ed (under the sign), and Steve (right) are holding up the sign waiting 4 hours while the cement sets. (Actually we were just doing a "test fit" to see if the holes were deep enough.)

New Signs Go Up
More holes for the second sign. Steve (left) and Mike (center) work the auger at the Maritime Lane corner while Ed (right) moves away the rocks and dirt being brought up to the surface, before it falls back into the hole.

New Signs Go Up
Busy supervisors. You can tell from the looks on their faces that Jennifer (left) and Brenda (hidden behind Barry) just know that their spouses are doing it all wrong.

New Signs Go Up
This baby has long legs. Barry (right) has already finished, but Steve (kneeling) is still working on fastening the last few screws.

Finishing touches. Mike puts the crown on the top of the concrete filler to keep water from pooling around the base of the post and causing premature rusting.
